My article is a comprehensive synopsis of Lawrence R. Murphy's book Perverts By Official Order, which quotes from reports by straight Naval recruits of their sexual trysts with gay peers as part of an officially sanctioned campaign against homosexual enlisted personnel in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1919. Please be aware that I do not censor the graphic language these young men used in describing their activities and which Lawrence cites extensively in his book.
